The Shocking Reason Fake Faith ALWAYS Fails Against Real Evil
When we open the nineteenth chapter of Acts, we encounter one of the most intense, sobering, and revealing accounts in the entire New Testament: the story of the seven sons of Sceva. These men were traveling opportunists operating in Ephesus—the undisputed occult capital of the Roman world. Having watched the extraordinary miracles God worked through the Apostle Paul, these brothers thought they could treat the name of Jesus like a magical formula or a secret incantation to cast out evil spirits. Their declaration tells you everything: "In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out." Notice they did not say their Jesus; they pointed to the Jesus Paul preached. They were attempting to lean on what I call secondhand faith.
The evil spirit's reply should stop every believer in their tracks: "Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?" In a matter of seconds, that single demonized man leapt on all seven brothers, overpowered them, beat them violently, and sent them fleeing into the street stripped and bleeding. It serves as a stark reminder that demonic forces are real, active, and fully aware of who carries authentic authority. You cannot borrow someone else’s spiritual walk, imitate someone's preaching cadence, or ride into battle on your parents' or pastor’s coattails. Darkness does not yield to clever words, badges, or religious formulas; it yields exclusively to authority that is rooted in a direct, obedient relationship with Jesus Christ.
Over my decades in ministry, I have seen firsthand that jumping into spiritual conflicts without true spiritual authority carries real, dangerous consequences. I vividly remember back in 1975, when a young believer who was only six months in the faith attempted to minister in a volatile situation across town without proper backing or preparation. My pastor and I had to rush over in a pickup truck to pull that young man off the floor before those demonic forces destroyed him. Authentic spiritual authority is not something you paste on from the outside. It is forged through time in God's presence, personal surrender, and a faithful daily walk—and the enemy knows the difference every single time.
Yet look at how the Lord redeemed the humiliating failure of Sceva’s sons. The report swept across Ephesus, producing a holy reverence for God and bringing deep conviction upon believers who had still been holding onto the occult practices of their past. They gathered their sorcery books—worth millions of dollars in today’s currency—and burned them in a massive public bonfire, cutting ties with darkness forever. Today, God is calling each of us to abandon secondhand faith, clear out any hidden compromises from our past, and walk in intimate fellowship with the Savior. At the name of Jesus every knee must bow, and when you truly belong to Him, His unmatched power stands behind you.
