8 ways the holy spirit helps pt2
One of the foundational ways the Holy Spirit helps us is by convicting. As I explored in our discussion, John 16:7-8 clearly states that the Holy Spirit convicts the world of its sin, God's righteousness, and coming judgment. The Greek word allego really emphasizes this idea of exposing what's hidden, bringing it to light. This conviction isn't just for unbelievers – drawing them towards the saving grace of Jesus – but it's also for us, His followers. It's that gentle (or sometimes not-so-gentle) nudge that helps us recognize when we've "missed the mark" and fallen short of God's perfect standard. It’s a crucial step towards repentance and growth.
Beyond conviction, the Holy Spirit also makes His home within us; He indwells us. This is a truth I find incredibly powerful. First Corinthians 3:16 reminds us that as Christians, we are temples of the Holy Spirit. Think about that for a moment – the very Spirit of God takes up residence within you the moment you invite Jesus into your life! Romans 8:9 further underscores this, stating that if you don't have the Spirit of Christ dwelling in you, you don't belong to Him. This isn't a fleeting visit; it's a continuous, abiding presence that is always with us, ready to guide and support.
Finally, the Holy Spirit acts as our divine teacher and advocate. John 14:26 promises that the Father will send the Holy Spirit to teach us everything and remind us of everything Jesus has said. The Greek word dedasco signifies instructing in minute detail, highlighting the Holy Spirit’s thoroughness in revealing truth to us. When you're reading your Bible, pray for the Holy Spirit to teach you, to unlock deeper understanding and transform your heart. He also serves as our paricletos, our advocate, one who comes alongside to assist. Whether it's like a lawyer representing us in a legal case or simply someone offering support in a crisis, the Holy Spirit is there, a constant helper, always ready to intercede and empower us.
